Sanders explained it’s not just Clinton with IL ties.

“Every mother you see here works so hard to protect her child, and yet we allow this epidemic of gun violence to stalk our streets, our playgrounds”, Clinton said.

The Clinton event is less than a mile from the UIC Pavilion where Trump’s rally had been scheduled and then abruptly canceled on Friday night.

But aides to Clinton’s campaign said the race has gotten closer in recent days in Illinois, Ohio and Missouri. “I was arrested, as a matter of fact; not something that most candidates put on their presidential résumé, but I was arrested fighting against segregation in the Chicago school system”, he said.

There was one protestor in the crowd, but she was not a supporter of another candidate.

Other presidential hopefuls will also be in the area on Monday.

Facing tightening contests in a trio Midwestern states that vote on Tuesday, Clinton is trying to boost support among minority voters. Cruz says he keeps “waiting for Jerry Lewis to come out and make and ask for money to help poor Donald Trump”.

IL voters on Tuesday also will choose nominees to face off for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican U.S. Sen. “We have to have a big vote tomorrow that can send a strong message that loves trumps hate”.

Clinton grew up in the nearby suburb of Park Ridge, but she does not appear to be enjoying much of a home-field advantage here. Cruz’ visit is one of several scheduled in IL throughout the day. Cruz told journalists in Rockford that Trump can’t be trusted because he donated to Democrats, such as former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, the Democratic Party of Cook County, where Chicago is located, and current Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Hillary Clinton will discuss breaking down barriers of economic opportunity at the free and public event, according to a press release from the Clinton campaign. Doors will open for Sanders’ rally at the Auditorium Theater at Roosevelt University at 8:30 p.m. Monday. The Texas senator began the day in Rockford at the Coronado Performing Arts Center.
