Jeffries and other wounded veterans – all featured in the book “Unbreakable Bonds: The Mighty Moms and Wounded Warriors of Walter Reed” – were invited to visit the famed Bush family summer residence in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Former President George H.W. Bush wrote the foreword to the book, which discusses mothers helping their sons recover from combat injuries at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

Jeffries is from Florida.

Lilly told ABC News she had her phone on vibrate and missed the first few calls. “I knew I wanted to do it up in Maine”. Jeffries lost both his legs to an explosion while serving in the Army in Afghanistan.

The couple said they appreciated the Bushes hosting them.

“And I was like, ‘oh my goodness.’ This is about to happen”, Lauren Lilly said. And seeing him able to get down on his knee, and how his girlfriend (now fiancée) is so quick to say yes, and watching as the Bush family is looking on with love and admiration…it’s just so attractive and brings happy tears to my eyes.

The couple has only been dating for three months, but Jeffries said as soon as he saw Lilly, he knew she was the girl for him.

Jeffries said one of the most important things about Lauren is her acceptance.
