Manchester United marched to their 4th consecutive defeat in all competitions against Stoke City this weekend and manager Louis van Gaal has said he will speak to Ed Woodward about his future..
Leaders Leicester lost 1-0 at Liverpool, their first away defeat of the campaign, with Christian Benteke sliding home a 63rd-minute victor after coming on to replace the injured Divock Origi before half-time on Saturday. “And I have to deal with that, but much more important is that the players have to deal with that because they have to perform”.
A weak back header from Memphis Depay enabled Glen Johnson to tee up Bojan Krkic for Stoke’s opener in the 19th minute and Marko Arnautovic brilliantly slammed home the hosts’ second goal seven minutes later after Bojan’s free-kick hit the wall.
“It is not always the club that has to fire or sack me”.
“I’m sure there were reasons why Wayne didn’t start the game”, Hughes said.
Jack Butland of Stoke City celebrates at the end of the his team’s Premier League on Saturday over Manchester United.
United, down to sixth in the Premier League, face struggling champions Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday and few would be surprised if Van Gaal was no longer in charge.
Van Gaal later explained Rooney’s omission to the BBC. Van Gaal, who succeeded David Moyes in the summer of 2014, said the club had backed him “all the time” but added: “We have lost so there is a new situation”.
As usual, on the United bench there was little outgoing evidence of concern, with neither Van Gaal nor assistant Ryan Giggs springing out of their seats to berate or inspire their team.
A day after British astronaut Tim Peake displayed a Stoke flag on the International Space Station, the central England team was in a different orbit to United in the first half.
It got even worse for United when Bojan’s free kick was blocked and with no defender closing down Arnautovic he thundered a shot past De Gea.

Rooney’s first significant contribution came after 20 minutes on the field, cutting the ball back for Fellaini six yards in front of goal.
