The move sparked intense warnings and criticism from South Korea, Japan, Russia and the United States.

Models of different types of rockets are displayed at the Sci-Tech Complex in Pyongyang, North Korea Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016. I hear the rhetoric that China does not want North Korea to fall, as it fears the refugee problem of a starving nation, but no deals seem now in order.
Pyongyang says the missile is scheduled to take the same trajectory as one launched 4 years ago, which passed over Okinawa Prefecture.
Japan has put its military on alert to shoot down any rocket that threatens its territory.
Following four hours of talks with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in Beijing last week, Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated China’s support for a tough new United Nations resolution but appeared to pour cold water on the idea of new penalties.
North Korea says it is boosting defense capabilities in the face of enemy threats.
The policy analyst shares the view of experts who believe that North Korea’s claim that it will be launching a satellite is a cover for a missile test.
“We are seriously concerned about that”, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said on Wednesday when asked by the press to comment on North Korea’s plans.
The government of Japan has ordered Aegis ballistic missile defense warships of the Maritime Self-Defense Force and land-based Patriot PAC-3 rocket units to respond should projections show components falling in Japanese territory, a Reuters report stated.
“Lewis also noted a now Treasury Department-confirmed report that North Korea and Iran have been cooperating on the development of a new 80-ton rocket booster, raising the possibility of the Unha-9 rocket using the booster as its first stage”, The Korea Times reported.
The Russian foreign ministry said in a statement that it had summoned the North Korean ambassador in Moscow over Pyongyang’s announcement that it will launch a satellite-bearing rocket sometime between Feb 8-25.
“The Japanese are anxious about this because the North Korean missile program doesn’t have a very good record”.
Leaders across the world have decried North Korea’s plans to test a long-range rocket later this month, despite Pyongyang’s insistence that it is simply trying to better the country’s space program.

South Koreans (above) watch file footage of a North Korean missile launch on a television screen at an electronics retail store in Seoul, South Korea. This means there is considerable debate about whether it can produce nuclear bombs small enough to place on a missile, or missiles that can reliably deliver their bombs to faraway targets.
