‘Pressure? What pressure?,’ asks Williams at Wimbledon
Go Girl!!! Wimbledon is scheduled to take place from June 27, 2016 until July 10, 2016. Their appearances in this format have been intermittent in recent years, such has been Serena’s assault on Steffi Graf’s record of 22 grand slam singles titles, but the siblings have made a decision to savour the ride while they still can. Let’s give a look at some of the more confident players in the women’s field.

Struggling on serve and failing to dominate against a 148th-ranked Swiss qualifier playing in her first Grand Slam tournament, Williams labored to a 6-2, 6-4 victory Tuesday over Amra Sadikovic – the 80th match win of her Wimbledon career. She played Amy Frazier in her opening match at the WTA event in San Diego weeks later, but could not finish the match due to injury and, days later in Germany, announced her retirement in a press conference. Kasatkina is set to make her debut at Wimbledon this year, while the 20-year old Duval will try to do better than her second round exit at Wimbledon in 2014.
In March 2011 she stepped back onto the tennis court and just two years later, she reclaimed her title as the number one female tennis player in the world.
Murray has lost the Australian and French Open finals to Novak Djokovic this year and has since rehired Ivan Lendl as coach. That could be cited as evidence that Muguruza doesn’t have momentum.
If Williams is going to get her hands on another grand slam, she will have to fend off some very worthy challengers. If ever a result could be understood, that was it. Muguruza enters Wimbledon as a reigning champion of a prestigious tournament, not as the loser of the Mallorca Open. Petra Kvitova, the two time victor at SW19, has been off her game recently. All of this should leave the door open for Radwanska to plot her way through to an exciting semifinals against Serena.
She is reaching for her seventh title, to match Roger Federer’s tally, and that would put her alongside Graf and two behind Margaret Court. As it is, Bertens is becoming a legitimately tough player.
Women’s tennis is also in great health – even as Garbiñe Muguruza and Angelique Kerber represent a generation that is mature and ready for top flight tennis, there is also a rich collection of young stars unafraid of firing at will on their day. “You have to live in the moment and when it’s over, it’s over”.
The award was monumental, but as a black woman in sport, Williams has been breaking down barriers around race and gender her entire career.
What’s interesting is that she is not always great on grass but she has been phenomenal on the surface this season.

Five-time champion Venus Williams won her opening match at Wimbledon for the 17th time when she beat Donna Vekic of Croatia 7-6 (3), 6-4. The fourth round in 2013 has been her best showing on grass. “You don’t see black people in the locker room”, she says. “It hurts”, said Sadikovic, who had posted wins over the likes of Eugenie Bouchard before deciding to quit.
