Marshall broke into showbiz in the late 1950s as a joke writer, eventually earning his way to becoming a writer on The Tonight Show with Jack Paar.
He soon progressed to writing scripts for a series of hit TV shows and caught the eye of comedian Joey Bishop, who took him to Los Angeles to write for The Joey Bishop Show.
Born and raised in The Bronx, Marshall moved to L.A.to write for such ’60s sitcoms as “The Dick Van Dyke Show“, and he was a longtime resident of Toluca Lake, where he often hosted basketball games for his casts, crews and Hollywood friends.
The conversion of 1970 Broadway show “The Odd Couple” into a sitcom marked the beginning of a TV sitcom enterprise for Marshall, who served as producer. In the 1970s, several of his projects highlighted the talents of his younger sister, Penny Marshall, whose title role on Laverne & Shirley gave momentum to her successful career as a director and producer.
In the mid 80s, Marshall shifted his focus to films, releasing The Flamingo Kid starring Matt Dillon in 1984. Other actors, from Rob Lowe and Jason Alexander to Alyssa Milano, also were crediting him with helping their early careers, posting tributes to Marshall. “He did these films that had heart – they were amusing, but they also had great dramatic moments, too”.
