Price, bats power Red Sox past Padres

After Price worked his magic, the Red Sox got another boost when right-handed reliever reliever Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless eighth in his first outing since July 19.

The Red Sox took a one-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays, who lost 2-0 to the New York Yankees.

“One pitch, it’s a different game”, Rosales said.

He walked none and struck out eight, giving him a 2.09 ERA in his last six starts, with 42 strikeouts and eight walks in 43 innings. Richard threw five innings of one-run ball on September 1 against the Dodgers but didn’t factor into the win.

“I think Drew gave us what we kind of anticipated – (105) pitches and six quality innings of work”, Boston manager John Farrell said. “That’s why you can’t give Clay enough credit for the role he’s been put into, some of it by his own doing early on”.

“I definitely felt good tonight to keep the ball away from the middle of the plate and execute pitches”, said Price, who threw 76 strikes in 98 pitches.

Boston has had an odd road trip so far as it totaled 27 runs in just two games against the A’s last Friday and Saturday night.

And he has allowed two runs over 12 1/3 innings in his last two starts. Williams got a rousing ovation for her efforts against the younger Pliskova, who’s just twenty-four years old while Venus is an ancient, at least in tennis years, thirty-six.

Added Buchholz: “Good times, bad times, I still feel like I can pitch and I can help this team out”.

Red Sox: RHP Steve Wright got a second opinion on his sore right shoulder on Tuesday, which confirmed there was no structural damage and that he is suffering from bursitis.

The game was scoreless when Boston’s Sandy Leon opened the fourth by beating the Padres’ shift with a ideal bunt to third bringing Padres pitching coach Darren Balsley to the mound to talk to Clemens. “Just take each game individually and I’ll move forward from there”.

On the season, Clemens has a 4.93 ERA and has allowed 10 homers in a total of 45 2/3 innings.

Neither team scored in the first three innings or in the last four.

Bradley followed Leon’s bunt by lining a 2-and-1 fastball from Clemens 399 feet into the right-field stands. He is 1-2 in four starts with the Padres this year. “I’m feeling good right now”.

The home run challenge was answered by Padres infielder Ryan Schimpf.

As Red Sox fans again chanted “We want Papi” – with Ortiz out of the lineup in a National League city – Brock Holt pinch hit in the ninth inning to their boos.

Bogaerts scored on Ramirez’s line drive to left to make it 4-1.

The Padres threatened in the seventh, when Oswaldo Arcia and Luis Sardinas singled. Ramirez was tagged out for a double play that ended the top of the inning.
