Despite sending what many regard as a “B” team, the United States will have a 623-member team and are expected to once again easily top the medals table with other regional powers Cuba, Canada, Brazil and Mexico jockeying for runner-up spots. The US athletes entered are 2012 Olympian Dennis Bowsher and Nathan Schrimsher.

The top men’s volleyball players will be competing in the domestic Superliga finals in Brazil, and renowned swimmers such as Cesar Cielo are going to world championships in Kazan.

“I’m so proud to be Canadian”, said Oldershaw, who will lead a team comprising more than 700 athletes at the opening ceremony on Friday. “Canadians will come out in full force and support their athletes”. Dressed head to toe in red and white, complete with red and white baseball caps, the athletes weaved congo-line style through the crowd as a band played.

The redemption will not be full for the Canadian men’s rugby sevens team at the Pan Am Games, yet a nice consolation prize dangles in front of them.

“Demand is up. We’re selling three or four times what we were selling a month ago and our sponsors have finalized their ticket purchases”, said Games spokesman Teddy Katz. “I think we have lovely facilities”. It’s jsut a little bit worse now.

“How well did it go overall, how did the city deal with it in terms of transportation, volunteers, interest in the Games, the festival that surrounded it, the legacy infrastructure”.

The Canadian men have played the USA six times this season with the Americans winning five, most recently at the June 14 North American Caribbean Rugby Association Olympic qualifier in Cary, N.C. Canada’s lone win over the USA was a 40-0 decision in May in Glasgow.

Harnett mentioned Canada’s baseball and softball teams, which hope to put the sports back in the spotlight in their request to return to the Olympic program in 2020.

Orange-draped security fences have gone up around the city, and at venues across the Golden Horseshoe for a Games that spans 350 kilometres between Welland and Minden.
