“Modi stopping over at Lahore and visiting the ancestral home of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is the beginning of new era of friendship between India and Pakistan”, BJP spokesman Khalid Jehangir said today.
He said as per decision of the two prime ministers, foreign secretaries of the two countries would meet on January 14 or 15 next in which a map for the agreed 10 identified points for the next six months would be drawn up. Modi, in his 20-minute address, said the government will design the programme according to the needs of the country.
Earlier, Mr Sharif’s spokesman said the pair were due to discuss a range of bilateral issues, including the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir – the most contentious issue dividing India and Pakistan.
“The challenge in India-Pakistan relations has always been to keep up the momentum of talks despite hiccups that are inevitable”, J. Jegannathan, professor of South Asian studies at the Central University of Jammu, told The Telegraph.
“This round is different because there is backing from the top where it matters … the army chief is himself on board”, a top diplomat said before the visit.
The New York Times, which quite often has been critical of the Prime Minister, while underscoring the significance of Modi’s impromptu trip to Lahore said the Indian leader in the past has moved from one policy to the other and described it as “a diplomatic dance”.
He said both the prime ministers had five meetings. The report further states that even though no formal announcement has been made regarding this, Modi and Sharif are likely to attend the event.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Sunday alleged Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a “self obsessed narcissist” and his “Mann Ki Baat” programme has disappointed the nation.
The PPP leader, however, did not agree with the foreign secretary that Modi-Nawaz meeting was “sudden”. “As we have long said, improved relations among neighbours will benefit the entire region”, spokesperson John Kirby said on Saturday. Later that evening, Pakistan Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhary announced a meeting between him and his Indian counterpart would take place in mid-January.
