It’s now over 32 years since any member of the Royal Family visited the Western Bay in an official capacity.

Other royals to have visited the marae include Charles’ siblings Princess Anne and Prince Edward.

It will be Charles’ ninth visit to New Zealand and the 15th time he has been to Australia, while Camilla will be making her second trip to both countries.

On the Australian part of the tour, Charles and Camilla will mark the centenary of Gallipoli by visiting the new National Anzac Centre in Albany and viewing the point from which the troop convoys departed.

“Lucy and I will be delighted to welcome The Prince and Duchess”, he said.

The prince is expected to be presented with a cake at the engagement which comes at the end of a 12-day visit to Australia and New Zealand from 4 to 15 November.

They head south after the Wellington visit and they are scheduled to arrive into Dunedin at the Railway Station. The Prince of Wales will visit the Cawthron Institute and The Duchess of Cornwall will visit the WOW museum. The Prince of Wales will also visit Westport.

Their New Zealand trip includes a meeting to the Maori King movement at Turangawaewae Marae in Waikato. They will attend the Nelson Market and attend a food and wine event. The prince will visit a dairy farm and the duchess the Len Lye Centre.

“In Auckland, The Prince will visit Nga Rangatahi Toa (“Strong Youth”) to hear how the organisation provides intensive creative arts mentoring through established artists, actors, musicians and creatives, to support young people back into work, education or training”. In New Zealand, he is Admiral of the Fleet of Royal New Zealand Navy, Field Marshal of the New Zealand Army and Marshal of Royal New Zealand Air Force.

The visit has been lauded as a victory by Maori royalty, who believe they were snubbed past year by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and their son Prince George.

“I am sure they will have a great time while they are here, and New Zealanders will make them feel very welcome”.
