I turned it down – and Prince blew up. The album went platinum, and “I Wanna Be Your Lover” reached number 11 on Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Prince’s death at age 57 has sparked an outpouring of grief from fans, with hundreds gathering outside his studio and in downtown Minneapolis and many more posting remembrances on social networks. Both albums were somewhat controversial, taking on sexualized and religious themes.
Buy his music: Naturally, Prince’s albums are available on iTunes, Amazon and other digital stores, and any record store in Portland will be surely featuring them prominently this week.
I think, more than a song, you should remember… what he did to break down barriers. His hits included “Little Red Corvette”, “Let’s Go Crazy” and “When Doves Cry”. Prince received an Academy Award in 1985 for his music from “Purple Rain”, the movie in which he starred as a young musician. Platinum is the industry certification for selling one million albums.
In 1987, Prince was set to release The Black Album, but chose to pull it at the last minute.
The singer established an independent film production company and entertainment complex Paisley Park Films. According to Prince, he was just “battling the flu” and fans should “wait a few days before you waste any prayers [on me, ]” according to TMZ. In a nasty dispute with his original label, Warner Bros., in the mid-1990s, Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol and painted the word “slave” on his face.
One fan, 32-year-old Amy Fox, says she came to the nightclub because it’s where Prince began his career.
The symbol was a rebellion against Prince’s record label, Warner Bros.
The singer’s worldview appeared to harden after he became a Jehovah’s Witness in 2001 following discussions with Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone, the funk band that deeply influenced Prince.

He also won seven Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “Long live the Prince”. In recent years it had been reported that Prince and Warner had mended their relationship and had plans to remaster and re-release much of his Warner catalog, but those plans had not yet come to fruition by the time of his passing. And yet he was a massive supporter of other artists, from writing and producing songs for artists as diverse as Chaka Khan, the Bangles, Sinéad O’Connor, Vanity, Morris Day and the Time and Tevin Campbell (among many others) to his mentoring and elevating of women in music, to the time where he put his own career on the line in defense of the rights of artists.
