Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ Coat Up for Auction
Like Bowie, Prince leaves behind a few celluloid impressions, including 1984’s Purple Rain, showing Saturday, April 30 at the Eureka Theater at 7:30 p.m.

Prince wore the black and white jacket with leather sleeves in a famous scene, as he picks up his co-star Apollonia Kotero on a motorcycle. “This is the first time ever for something like this, and it might be the only time”.
“It’s definitely the most important piece of screen-worn Prince clothing that’s ever come up for auction”, Profiles in History president Joe Maddalena said. “I bought it from Prince” is a good way to impress any potential date.
The asking price is $6,000 to $8,000, but Maddalena predicts it will ultimately sell for “much more” in the wake of the “Little Red Corvette” singer’s death. “It seems like he controlled it all”, said Maddalena.
Though the auction will also include items from the likes of Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Alicia Keys and a Swarovski crystal encrusted glove from Michael Jackson, it’s the coat that is most coveted.

Inspired by Prince’s early life, Purple Rain revolves around a talented, headstrong young artist dubbed The Kid who struggles with a hard home life, musical rivals, a budding romance and balancing his band on the road to fame. That makes the fact that the late musician has landed three albums in the Top 10 of this week’s Billboard 200 chart – including the #1 position – all the more impressive. That number combines his sales on the day of April 21 (239,000 albums and 1.034 million song downloads), along with the sales reports for April 22-27 (496,000 albums and 2.24 million songs). Drake’s “One Dance” (Cash Money/ Republic/ Universal), featuring Wizkid & Kyla, starts a third week atop the singles chart, on which Prince has six titles in the top 100.
