Police say 34-year-old officer Carlos Puente Morales, and 30-year old officer Susan Farrell, died along with a prisoner they were transporting when another vehicle that was going the wrong way slammed into their police SUV. Both had been on the job less than a year.
The officers were driving eastbound on the interstate when the vehicle they were traveling in was struck head on by a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the interstate.
“I’m heartbroken to hear this morning of a tragic vehicle crash involving two fallen police officers from the Des Moines Police Department”, wrote Reynolds.
The officers and the other driver were wearing seat belts, although it wasn’t clear if the prisoner was, officials said.
“Obviously, this is a very sad day for the Des Moines Police Department as we face a nightmare that no agency ever wants to experience. Chris and I wish to extend our honest sympathies to the families of everyone impacted in this horrific accident”, Branstad said in the statement.
