Cinematography: Emmanuel Lubezki, “The Revenant”. Inarritu, who won previous year for “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”, is likely to be the third (he won both the Golden Globe and Directors Guild awards). The Producers Guild of America honored “The Big Short” as best film, and Adam McKay’s economic-meltdown flick is intelligent, entertaining and provocative. Stallone, nominated a second time 39 years later for the role of Rocky Balboa, had been expected to win his first acting Oscar for the “Rocky” sequel “Creed”. The Hollywood Reporter reported in January that “Mad Max: Fury Road” beat the previous record holder “Moulin Rouge” that scored eight nominations and two wins at the Academy Awards in 2001.
This year, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, some of the best films looked beyond our own world.
“Fury Road” swept the technical prizes Sunday at the Oscars, the pinnacle of Hollywood’s glittering awards season, as host Chris Rock delivered a searing salvo against the lack of diversity among nominees. She also thanked her co-star Eddie Redmayne, last year’s Best Actor victor and a nominee again this year for The Danish Girl.
Despite overwhelming acclaim and six nominations, Todd Haynes’ Carol missed the final cut for Best Picture. “You realize if they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job”, joked Rock, 51, who continued with a series of jibes against the Academy throughout the night. Therefore, if “Mad Max” does not win, conventional wisdom would have it that one of these four films has a better shot than “The Martian”, “Bridge of Spies” and “Brooklyn”. With ten nominations under its belt, Mad Max: Fury Road has bagged six statuettes at the 88 edition of Academy Awards for the Best costume design, Best production design, Best make-up and hair, Best editing, Best sound editing and Best sound mixing.
Although The Revenant has already been crowned best movie by other prestigious awards, Oscars success isn’t necessarily a done deal.
Mad Max: Fury Road film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. The award for Best Documentary Feature went to “Amy”. Hungary scored its second best foreign language Oscar for Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul”, a harrowing drama set within a concentration camp. But critics praised its graceful handling of its lurid subject matter and the Academy Awards seem to agree with it winning two of the biggest awards.
Rock has been making unannounced appearances at the Comedy Store in West Hollywood in recent weeks to prepare for the show, and he’s hinted that the diversity debate prompted him to completely re-work his opening monologue.
The prizes for Best Actor and Actress went to Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant and Brie Larson for Room.

Only twice has a director won back-to-back Oscars – John Ford for “The Grapes of Wrath” and “How Green Was My Valley” in the early 1940s and Joseph L. Mankiewicz for “A Letter to Three Wives” and “All About Eve”, a decade later.
