A report in the Sheffield Star on Sunday claimed Helan had made a decision to call time on his career at age 24 for religious reasons.

The player, known to be a private man, hasn’t been talking publicly about his situation.

However, his contract with Wednesday only expires at the end of the season and the club remains in talks with the defender over his future at Hillsborough. He said that he wanted to quit for Saudi to concentrate on religion after becoming more involved at a mosque in Sheffield. The club are a bit taken aback by it.

Helan, who was controversially signed by Manchester City as a 16-year-old, moved to Wednesday in late 2012 on an initial month-long loan deal.

At the age of 24, the devout Muslim has reportedly fallen out of love with the game and is set to give up his life as a professional footballer to focus on his religion.

He came on as a second-half substitute in the play-off final at Wembley, which ended in a 1-0 defeat to Hull City.

The Frenchman moved on loan to fellow Sky Bet Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers in February last season, making eight appearances.
