Progress made in fire threatening California mountain homes

The 12-square-mile blaze forced the closure of Apple Valley and Oro Grande school districts due to poor and smoky air quality.

A 20-day-old wildfire near California’s Big Sur coast has grown to more than 107 square miles, but authorities say fire activity has been minimal and it remains 50 percent contained Wednesday.

In central California, the Mineral Fire saw “extreme fire behavior” overnight, burning 5,000 acres off Highway 198 in Fresno County, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Among other wildfires in the state, firefighters contained 10 per cent of a almost 8-square-mile blaze in rugged terrain about 8 miles west of the small town of Coalinga in Fresno County.

Meanwhile, a wildfire in the San Bernardino County mountains grew to more than 7,700 acres Tuesday, putting thousands of homes in danger, reported the Los Angeles Times. The number of people who left was not known.

“We’ve made significant progress, absolutely”, Poole said.

The fire, which has destroyed 57 homes, damaged three others and led to the death of a bulldozer operator in an accident, was caused by an illegal campfire. While some residents in the Big Sur area have been allow to return to their homes, five state parks along U.S. Highway 1 between Los Angeles and San Francisco remain closed.
