Prosecutors drop charges against man in Chandra Levy case
So the case seems to be over in terms of Guandique. Prosecutors now say he will be deported, if the judge in the case agrees with their request to dismiss the indictment. Instead, Guandique, a man from El Salvador who was in the United States illegally, will face deportation proceedings. “Finally, the government has had to concede the flaws in its ill-gotten conviction”. Now, in the wake of today’s announcement from federal prosecutors in the case, no retrial will occur. Prosecutors argued her death fit a pattern of attacks Guandique committed on female joggers. Chandra Levy initially went missing in May 2001 and was later found to have been romantically linked to a congressman, before police eventually cleared the congressman of any suspicion.

“This dismissal vindicates Mr. Guandique”.
Despite the release of the only person ever charged in the death of Chandra Levy, her parents are still holding out hope that someday, somebody will be held accountable for their daughter’s murder.
Despite his never being named a suspect, media coverage of the investigation contributed to Condit’s re-election loss in 2002.
Defense lawyers have argued, though, that Morales lied during the trial and that prosecutors knew or should have known the testimony was problematic.
The prosecutors’ move marks the latest twist in a tumultuous crime saga that began with Levy’s disappearance shortly before she was to return to her family’s Modesto home after months in Washington as an intern at the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. Her skeletal remains were found in the Washington area a year later and police concluded that she had met with foul play.
In a deposition, Condit was asked to describe his relationship with the younger woman. Gary Condit, who was roundly criticized by his colleagues for his “evasive” interviews about their relationship.
“Condit subsequently lost the Democratic primary and left Congress in 2003”. At a January hearing, one of Mr. Guandique’s lawyers told a judge that Mr. Condit misled the jury with his testimony at the 2010 trial, but he did not elaborate. The defense team has meant to depose women who had been in sexual relationships with Condit, and had allegedly testified that he engaged in both rough sex and bondage. And prosecutors’ actions suggest that they may no longer think he was killer.
Though officials declined to specify what the new developments are, the case against Guandique, based originally on the statements of a jailhouse informant, has had consistent problems.
