Arch rival Samajwadi Party, which can not see eye to eye with the BSP, however, has sided with Mayawati on the issue of women’s dignity and Dalit honour, at least publicly, and said that the former BJP leader would be brought to book.

An FIR has been filed by suspended BJP lawmaker Dayashankar Singh’s family against BSP supremo Mayawati accusing her of intimidation and promoting enmity.

The comments against Mayawati have provoked outrage in Parliament, with opposition parties uniting against the government at a time politics over Dalits have taken centre-stage following the flogging and shaming of tannery workers in Gujarat for skinning a dead cow. There is every possibility that the BJP could meet the same fate it did in Bihar after the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat called for a relook at the country’s reservations policy.

This comes after Singh’s outrageous comments on camera comparing rival leader Mayawati to a prostitute.

She then added, “Whosoever gets me his (Dayashankar’s) tongue, Jannat Jahan will give him Rs 50 lakh”.

All district units of the party have been asked to stage demonstrations under the banner of “Beti Ke Samman Mein, Bhajpa Maidan Mein, ‘ meaning ‘For honour of a daughter, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on the streets”. “Today her character is worse than that of a prostitute”, Singh said (as quoted by the media). “Where are the women activists now?”, Swati said. “If someone gives her Rs one crore for a ticket, she will give it to the other person who is offering Rs 2 crores”, Singh had told reporters, repeatedly using the word “veshya” in Hindi.

Meanwhile, Mayawati’s party members filed a police case against Singh. With leaders like Singh, the BJP should not hope to perform any better than the previous Assembly election in UP.

IG (public grievances) D K Mishra said that raids were being conducted to arrest Singh.
