Protest goes peacefully outside Panthers game

Security for Sunday’s Carolina Panthers home football game was tight.

Sunday’s Panthers game against the Minnesota Vikings has been declared an “Extraordinary Event” by the Interim City Manager of Charlotte. I can tell you I suspect they will, based on the video footage. Along the sideline inside the game, Carolina safety Marcus Ball raised his fist during the national anthem. Officers have said Scott had a gun, according to a police statement. It’s not apparent in the video if he’s holding anything shortly before he was shot.

On Sunday, protesters led by a man with a bullhorn across the street from Bank of America Stadium were surrounded by at least two dozen police officers on bicycles. Police blocked off downtown streets late into the night as they had throughout the day, allowing demonstrators to take over roadways without confrontations with vehicles.

But police said for the first time that they had recovered a loaded gun bearing Scott’s DNA, and that he was wearing an ankle holster.

Police say detectives interviewed witnesses, who confirmed that Scott hadn’t complied with officers’ demands. “But what we do see is compelling evidence that, when you put all the pieces together, supports that”.

Justin Bamberg, one of the lawyers for the Scott family, said Saturday after the video release that many questions need to be answered. “The moment he is shot, he is passively stepping back”.

“We are delighted as a family that the video has been released, that we have the absolute unfiltered truth”, said Ray Dotch, Scott’s brother-in-law. A few things we won’t tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity (including expletives and letters followed by dashes), commercial promotion, impersonations, incoherence, proselytizing and SHOUTING.

Scott was killed Tuesday by a black police undercover police officer trying to serve a warrant on someone else. From a different angle, newly released police body camera footage shows an officer approach with his gun drawn and another officer already pointing his gun at Scott.

When Scott comes into view, he has his hands at his side and is standing outside of his SUV.

When another officer used his baton to breach the front passenger window, Scott exited, “while continuing to ignore officers’ repeated loud verbal commands to drop the gun”, according to the report.

In explaining why he was releasing the footage after initially refusing to do so, Putney said people “want to see the facts, objective facts”.

A police narrative released along with the video gives the most complete account yet by the agency of what brought Scott to police attention.

The officer who shot Mr Scott, Mr Brentley Vinson, is black. People wishing to obtain videos can file a lawsuit to get the tapes, but Marshall said that can be expensive, where releasing the video quickly could help the public understand better what had happened.

On Saturday, Putney released to the public footage from one of the officers’ body cameras, as well as dashboard camera. They linked arms and formed a circle around fellow protesters.

Tuesday’s shooting has sparked violent protests, requiring the North Carolina governor to declare a state of emergency and to call in the National Guard. One man was shot and later died in rioting that broke out on Wednesday night, but the nights since have been more peaceful.

The Democratic presidential nominee had been scheduled to visit Charlotte on Sunday but pushed off the trip at the request of city officials, who said the city needed to heal after last week’s police shooting death.
