Protesters call for prosecution of police in fatal shooting

Federal and state authorities are resisting releasing the footage, which is from an ambulance, mobile police camera, public housing cameras and people’s cellphones, because they say it doesn’t show the full incident and making the recordings public would compromise their investigations.

Protesters have occupied the block of Plymouth Ave.in front of the Minneapolis Police Department 4th Precinct since November 15, when a 24-year-old black man was shot and killed by an officer.

The nation’s oldest civil rights organization is calling for a candlelight vigil and march in Minneapolis to bring attention to the latest fatal shooting of a young black man by a police officer.

Evans added that the FBI would be conducting a civil rights investigation into the shooting, which Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges had requested in a letter.

The group Black Lives Matter had hoped Gov. Dayton would call on law enforcement to immediately release video from the shooting of Jamar Clark.

Minneapolis Police Department Officers Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze were involved in the shooting, but it’s not clear who fired the fatal shot.

BlackLivesMatteractivists and community members in northern Minneapolis maintained their protest outside a police station, where they have spent the last week encamped over the killing of an unarmed Blackyoungadult, demanding the officers involved be arrested.

Police have said the officers were responding to an assault call and found Clark interfering with paramedics.

Protesters have pledged to maintain their protest over the killing of Jamar Clark, who was shot last week by police, until their demands are met. He was shot by a police officer in what authorities say was a scuffle.

It’s been the centerpiece of the week-long protest outside the Minneapolis 4th precinct.

This week several unions have gone on record in support of the ongoing protests and the call for justice for Jamar, including SEIU Minnesota State Council and AFSCME 3800, among others.

Dayton says he is asking those who are grieving to behave in ways that don’t cause further damage to people’s lives and property. She says the family “does not want it to be political”. Chief Janee Harteau says any investigation would find her officers have handled all of this with professionalism, and she says she’s so proud of how they’ve handled themselves.

Authorities also say none of the videos shows the shooting in its entirety.

Funeral plans have been set for Clark on Wednesday at noon at the Shiloh Temple global Ministries on Broadway Avenue in the city’s North Side, according to Clark’s cousin.

McKnight said any focus on Clark’s background is misplaced. A few people in the community say they saw him handcuffed at the time of the shooting. The point is: “He was unarmed, on the ground, now he’s dead”, she said.
