Having overcome a multimillion-dollar “Never Trump” campaign aimed at blocking him from the Republican nomination, he’s now benefiting from a wave of GOP donors, party leaders, voters and conservative groups that are uniting under a new banner: “Never Hillary”.

Protesters and supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump clash outside Trump’s event.

Trump is also scheduled to appear later in the day at a rally in San Diego, where police are also taking precautions to prevent the kind of violence that has occurred at previous protests against the Republican presidential candidate.

John Eastman, a law professor at the Orange-based Chapman University who backed Cruz, said he might not decide on supporting Trump until after the convention. At last report 35 arrests in the Gaslamps area of the city had been made.

Trump has pledged to build a wall along the USA border with Mexico to keep out illegal immigrants.

As Trump spoke inside the San Diego Convention Center, more than 1,000 protesters demonstrated outside the venue.

Sanders’ campaign had been aggressively advocating for a debate with Trump after the idea was raised during an appearance by the NY billionaire on a talk show this week.

Sanders, a US senator from Vermont, expressed disappointment on Friday.

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks said that such a debate is not formalized yet, but Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver said that “a few discussions” have been carried out between the two camps. Trump still remains the presumptive nominee until delegates formally cast their ballots at the Republican convention.
