Wasserman Schultz, who was co-chair of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, took fire throughout the presidential primaries from Sanders supporters who said she rigged the process in Clinton’s favor.
Earlier on Sunday, Sanders’ had called for Wasserman Schultz to resign due to her role in the scandal.
Rep. Marcia Fudge has been selected to serve chair of the Democratic National Convention, which kicks off Monday.
Thousands of demonstrators are taking to Philadelphia’s sweltering streets Sunday, chanting and beating drums in the first major protests ahead of the Democratic National Convention, as the city wilts during a heat wave. He held on to his candidacy past the primaries despite Clinton attaining enough delegates to secure the nomination, and an uneasy truce was brokered that saw Sanders endorse Clinton in exchange for progressive concessions on the party platform. While she deserves thanks for her years of service, the party now needs new leadership that will open the doors of the party and welcome in working people and young people.
“Going forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step down as Party Chair at the end of this convention”, Wasserman Schultz said in her statement.
“I think [Wasserman Schultz] should resign”.
In return, Clinton seized upon what she called the “fear and the anger and the resentment” from Trump and Republicans, dismissing Trump’s declaration that only he could fix the problems that afflict the nation.
The Democrats had been trying to avoid the divide that was apparent in Cleveland during the Republican National Convention last week. DNC Vice Chairwoman Donna Brazile will serve as interim chair through the election, the DNC said on Twitter. Bernie Sanders’s chances during the primaries.
The leak also showed the party’s chief financial officer sought to promote a media narrative that Sanders had “skated” on his “Jewish heritage”, and suggested that his lack of religiosity would be a political weakness.
Just hours after we told you that Democratic unity was falling apart left and right comes word that the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee was all but banished from this week’s national convention in Philadelphia.
She now will step down at the end of the convention.

“To my mind, what is most important now is the defeating of the worst candidate for president that I have seen in my lifetime, Donald Trump, who is not qualified to be president by temperament, not qualified to be president by the ideas that he has brought forth”, Sanders said on ABC. This week, delegates, celebrities, politicians, and reporters will head to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where delegates will be counted and Hillary Clinton will presumably be announced at the party’s presidential nominee. “And I think we need a new chair who is going to lead us in a very different direction”.
