Protesters in Charlotte clashed with police in riot gear in a tense scene Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning after police shot and killed a person carrying a gun at a Charlotte apartment complex.
Charlotte police said on Twitter that about a dozen officers were injured during Tuesday’s night protest, with one getting hit in the face with a rock.
CHARLOTTE, N.C: Tensions flared in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Tuesday after police fatally shot a 43-year-old black man who they said was armed with a gun when officers approached him in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Photos and TV video showed police firing tear gas to break up the crowd.
Yet another American city has erupted in protests after a fatal police shooting.
Police said officers went to a Charlotte apartment complex around 4pm looking for a suspect with an outstanding warrant when they encountered Scott, who was not the suspect they were looking for, inside a vehicle.
WBTV reported that, in the video, the woman said Scott was sitting in his auto reading a book before the officers deployed a Taser and shot him four times.
As they approached, the man re-emerged from the auto with a gun, Mr Trietley said in a statement.
Brentley Vinson, the officer involved in the shooting, has been placed on paid administrative leave, according to the mayor. In addition, the department stressed that Vinson and Scott are both African-American.
Police said a firearm “the subject was holding at the time of the shooting” was recovered at the scene, and that detectives were interviewing witnesses to the incident.
Police have used tear gas to disperse protesters after officers were injured and a major road was shut down during a demonstration over the latest fatal shooting of a black man by USA police. One of them held up a sign saying “Stop Killing Us”.
No rioters could be seen around 5 a.m. but broken glass and rocks littered the ground where a police auto had been vandalized during riots earlier.
Earlier, a tow truck was brought in to take another police cruiser away. Several people suffered non-life threatening injuries, media reported.
One television news crew retreated from the scene after demonstrators began rocking their remote van, which was parked near the apartment complex where the shooting occurred.
“The community deserves answers and full investigation will ensue”.
Lawyers for the family of Terence Crutcher, 40, disputed that he posed any threat before he was shot by Tulsa Officer Betty Shelby after his sport utility vehicle broke down on Friday.
A lawyer for the officer who killed Terence Crutcher said she also feared for her life and fired when Crutcher reached through a window into the auto.
The US Department of Justice said on Monday it would conduct a federal civil rights probe, a investigation parallel to the one local authorities in the state are carrying out.
