Protesters take aim at Chicago shopping district

More than 50 protesters gathered on a bridge over the Chicago River before heading down Michigan Avenue, which is crowded with last-minute Christmas shoppers. Several protesters laid down at an intersection, forcing the oncoming traffic to divert route. Protesters sought to emulate a similar event on Black Friday, which forced many stores to close as about 1,000 protesters blocked store entrances. A line of officers rebuffed protesters who attempted to enter the train station.

While a video of the shooting has been out for a month, audio of the radio calls of the shooting were released just this week, revealing a conversation about whether anybody had a stun gun to deal with McDonald, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The protesters also called for the resignation of Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel. Now, the officer behind the shooting has been charged with murder.

“The biggest demonstration was the day after Thanksgiving on Michigan Avenue, as protesters locked arms to prevent shoppers from getting in and out of stores on one of the busiest shopping days of the year”, David says.

Demonstrators are planning to march through downtown Chicago’s high-end shopping district again to draw attention to the 2014 police killing of a black teenager who was shot 16 times by a white officer.

Van Dyke, 37, has been charged with murder and is out on bail pending formal arraignment December 29.

“We will be a better city for it”, Emanuel said.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and a winter of discontent, a season of police bullhorns and Christmas lights.

One activist, Pete White, said the demonstration was motivated in part by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s recent decision not to charge a California Highway Patrol officer who repeatedly punched a woman, Marlene Pinnock, along the Harbor Freeway.

The audio is a piece of the puzzle in an investigation into why Chicago police officers didn’t use a non-lethal approach towards McDonald instead of gunning down the teen.
