Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers were searching at the complex for someone else who was wanted on an outstanding warrant, police said in a statement. Witnesses and relatives of the man dispute that, and say that he was holding only a book when police approached him as he stepped from his auto.

But a counter narrative has emerged from neighbors and witnesses of the scene, which also has been widely circulated online. She also said Scott is disabled.

A woman claiming to be Scott’s daughter live streamed the scene on Facebook for more than an hour after the shooting.

By early Wednesday morning, protesters had shut down traffic on Interstate 85, the Post reports. “Unfortunately, we saw several instances of violence during the protests and 12 police officers and a number of demonstrators were injured as a result”.

In the video, the woman said her father was sitting in his auto reading a book and waiting for the school bus to drop off his son.

Some students wore T-shirts reading “Black Lives Matter”.

Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan said the video, which shows Terence Crutcher walking to his auto with his hands over his head before the officer shot him, was “very disturbing”.

When officers approached, Scott then exited the auto with a handgun and was shot, according to Putney.

It was unclear if Scott was pointing a gun at police and whether he said anything to the officers.

She alleged in the expletive-filled video that her father was gunned down at The Village at College Downs “for being black”.

North Carolina allows for the open carry of handguns, including having a pistol in a vehicle.

Authorities had to use tear gas to disperse the protests, which happened after another demonstration in Tulsa, Oklahoma, over the shooting there of an unarmed black man by police.

The police chief said 16 officers suffered injuries and police cars were damaged after people began throwing rocks One officer was hit in the face.

Trietley said the department’s internal affairs bureau would conduct a separate investigation, which was standard procedure, and that the officers would be placed on administrative leave.

By 5 a.m. Wednesday, the streets were quiet and I-85 was moving again.

The suspect’s race and the races of the officers involved was not immediately released. The African-American officer who shot Scott, identified as Brently Vinson, was not wearing a body camera, Putney said.

Broken glass and rocks littered the ground where a police auto had been vandalised. Less than 5 miles away, wooden pallets barricaded the entrance to a Wal-Mart that had apparently been looted.

Officers in riot gear deployed tear gas into a crowd of protesters after individuals targeted police cruisers, ABC affiliate WSOC-TV Charlotte reported.

Here is how police say the shooting unfolded.

Gov. Pat McCrory issued a statement pledging support for Putney and Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts in their efforts to “keep the community calm and to get this situation resolved”.
