Protests in Chicago After Video Released of Deadly Shooting of Laquan McDonald

Several hundred people marched north along the thoroughfare, blocking traffic. It took place more than a year ago.

Protesters blocked MI Avenue earlier Tuesday night before marching to a South Loop police building and then turning north again.

Minneapolis identified the two suspects arrested as a 23-year-old white man and a 32-year-old Hispanic – and said a search was on for additional suspects. Alvarez described it as “violent”, “chilling”, and “graphic”. “Jason Van Dyke does not represent the police department”. The spokesman said he didn’t know on what charge. The protesters remained peaceful as state and city police accompanied them.

Daniel Herbert, an attorney representing the officer, told reporters that the case should be tried in court, not in the media or on the streets.

The video is graphic and shows 17-year-old Laquan McDonald being shot and killed.

Authorities say Laquan McDonald, 17, was armed with a 4-inch knife when Officer Jason Van Dyke confronted him. “My hope is that this allows us not only to heal, but to work together towards a more just and accountable criminal justice system”.

Before the video, which was ordered by a court to be made public, was shown police along with the dead man’s family pleaded with people in Chicago not to turn to violence to express their outrage as previously happened in Ferguson and Baltimore.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said in a press conference he understands how people will feel after watching this video. Police report that he refused to drop the knife, and would not respond to requests to stop walking.

Van Dyke opened fire seconds after he arrived and continued shooting at the teenager as he lay on the ground, the lawyer added.

The vehicle with the camera continues to roll forward until the officers are out of the frame.

Protesters took to the streets, occasionally blocking intersections and then moving on. She noted that a witness also indicated that McDonald appeared to be trying to move away from police, and that Van Dyke was allegedly preparing to reload his weapon when another officer intervened and stopped him.

Ahead of the video’s release, the city’s mayor pleaded for calm.
