PS4 Pro patch announced for The Witness

Sony also revealed a revamped version of its standard PlayStation 4.

The same discs and downloads will be available on both the standard model and the new PS4 Pro, but some games will play differently on PS4 Pro to support the higher resolution. A new, slimmer and more energy efficient PlayStation®4 also was announced and will launch starting on September 15, 2016 for $299. As expected, Sony officially unveiled its upgraded console during the PlayStation Conference earlier today. This is the first time it will have 2 consoles for sale with significantly different graphics capabilities within the same generation. There’s something that the PS4 Pro won’t feature, though, and it’s something that the Xbox One S has: a 4K Blu-ray player.

Zenimax Online Studios has published a short trailer that shows off what The Elder Scrolls Online will look like running on the PS4 Pro. This is particularly baffling since Blu-Ray is Sony’s own creation, and being able to play the latest, greatest movie format has been a core feature of the company’s consoles since the PS2 era.

In an unexpected bit of good news, Sony announced that all PS4 consoles will be getting a firmware update to allow them to support HDR. Sony has confirmed that the PS4 Pro will have a GPU of 4.2 teraflops. Polygon reports that the console will be 43% more powerful than the PS4 Pro, and Penello states: “The performance delta will be obvious”.

While no Australian pricing and release dates have been unveiled as yet (we’ll expect to see that once everyone gets to work at about 9am), we do have U.S. pricing and release dates for you. It has been called as the PlayStation 4 Neo for months, but now is officially named as the PlayStation 4 Pro and is set for a November 10 release priced at only $399.
