PSG suffer shock defeat at Monaco

Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim was ecstatic with his side’s 3-1 win over Ligue 1 Champions Paris Saint-Germain at Stade Louis II on Sunday.

Edinson Cavani pulled a goal back in the second half but a Serge Aurier own-goal late on secured a deserved win for the home side that lifts them level on seven points with early league leaders Guingamp.

Moutinho, a Euro 2016 victor with Portugal, got the opener with a terrific first-time strike from a Djibril Sidibe cross and Cavani squandered a decent chance to level the scores before Monaco won a penalty right at the end of the first half.

Moutinho, who played in Portugal’s European Championship final win against France last month, struck in the 13th minute.

The visitors made a sluggish start and soon found themselves trailing to Monaco when Moutinho expertly guided Djibril Sidibé’s delivery beyond Kevin Trapp from just inside the area.

Shortly after PSG left back Layvin Kurzawa missed a good chance against his old club, Cavani pounced in the 63rd when he headed in Aurier’s cross. Fabinho stepped up and converted the spot-kick, 2-0.

It was Monaco who got the game’s crucial fourth goal, though, hitting PSG on the counter-attack through Moutinho’s pass to Sidibe, who in turn sent a cross into the middle that was deflected past Trapp by Aurier for an own goal.

PSG won the title by 31 points in May, losing only two games, but they were outclassed by Monaco who finished third last term.
