No club from the Netherlands has been to the knockout phase since.

“They really deserved it”, PSV coach Phillip Cocu said.

His first priority will be to ensure his side shrug off some inconsistent domestic form.

With PSV’s 2-1 win against CSKA and Wolfsburg 3-2 victory against United, the Eindhoven-based side qualified for the next round as No. 2 in Group B, on 10 points, two behind Wolfsburg and with two more than United, which had to settle for the Europa League, and six more than Moscow.

Their fate is in their own hands even though they start match day six in third place in the group, two points behind Wolfsburg and one behind United.

Manchester United will be without striker Wayne Rooney and midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin for their crucial Champions League game at Wolfsburg. While the Red Devils might have stolen Memphis Depay away from the Dutch champions, awful performances from Louis van Gaal’s men have handed PSV four points which could see them beat the Old Trafford club to the final 16.

“We are aware of the performances of CSKA Moscow”.

The Russians will be without a number of key players for the trip to the Netherlands, with Vasili Berezutski, Georgi Shchennikov and Roman Eremenko staying in Moscow.

After only 18 minutes PSV had the lead when Sam Lammer’s through ball sent Ramon Pascal Lundqvist through on goal and the attacker finished calmly.

Luuk’s goalless loan spell saw him play 12 games for Newcastle as he was a major flop for the Magpies, with supporters no doubt confused as to how he not only fired PSV to Champions League glory against CSKA, but also hit 45 goals in his 67 appearances for the Dutch giants.
