According to Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine, there would be three sources of funding: crowdfunding, an external partner (who is yet to be revealed), and Double Fine’s equity.

It looks like the new year is already starting with a bang for Psychonauts fans, thanks to the good word from Double Fine that the crowdfunding campaign for the official sequel has managed to reach its ambitious $3.3 million United States dollars goal in pledges with just days to spare.
“Holy Smokes! We did it you guys! So thank you, thank you, thank you!” According to Double Fine’s estimates, it needs to sell 693,638 units of the game for $21 so that people with investments as low as $500 get their payoff.
The campaign still has five days to go on the clock, but expect further “mission updates” thereafter to explain exactly what’ll come next. The studio posted this short video as a thank you to the backers.
The game appears to be sticking with the formula of the original title in terms of graphics, writing and mechanics, but hopefully with some things switched up to make it worth our time.
Psychonauts 2’s crowdfunding site, Fig, is different to a traditional crowdfunding site like Kickstarter, in that it aims to allow users to invest in the game they back, with the opportunity of returns should the project be successful.

Basically, instead of getting a t-shirt and some game schwag, you could receive cash rewards based on how well the game performs after release.
