Relatives of the suspected shooter, Nashat Milhem from the Arab village of Arara in northern Israel, say they recognized the man from CCTV footage aired on news reports.
The shooting came at a time of heightened unease in Israel and Palestinian territories, with a recent wave of violence that has included stabbings and other kinds of attacks on civilians and Israeli soldiers. The gunman then fled the scene of the shooting, resulting in a massive manhunt throughout the city of Tel Aviv. It was Melhem’s father who alerted the police after seeing footage of the attack from a security camera.
The Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality said that extra security forces would be deployed around schools, kindergartens, and crowded areas, though the mayor also made a statement saying that parents could keep their kids home from school if they chose.
One of those killed was identified by his father as Alon Bakal, a law and business student who was a manager at Simta, the pub targeted, with police naming the second as Shimon Ruimi from southern Israel.
A Tel Aviv police source said, “At every moment there are hundreds of police taking part in searches and patrols”.
On Saturday, several funerals of Palestinians, who allegedly carried out attacks on Israelis, took place in Hebron’s West Bank.
The incident came nearly two years after a suicide attack on a Lebanese restaurant in the city killed 21 people, including 13 expatriates, and prompted many foreign organisations to withdraw staff or place tight restrictions on their movements.
At least three people were also wounded in the attack.
Paul Goodman reported from Tel Aviv.
Haim Pinto, owner of a jewelry store near the pub, said he was outside closing his shop when the shooting began.
Hours after the deadly shooting, two rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel. He said that while many Muslims in Israel speak out against violence and aspire to uphold law and order in their communities there is “wild incitement by Islamic extremists against Israel in the Arab sector, incitement in mosques, and incitement in the education system and incitement on social media”.
He said a shooter was “firing in every direction while he was running”.
The witness, who wasn’t named by the newspaper, said “people were collapsing because of the stress” while others chased the gunman after he stopped shooting.

“I heard gunshots and turned around; I saw people rushing to the back of the cafe”. According to CNN, from October to Mid-November alone, 20 Israelis have been killed and more injured.
