Public relations nightmare for Mexican president following controversial Donald Trump visit
The speech served as a hit for Trump’s base of support.

Mexico’s President Enrico Pena Nieto agreed that it was the US’ prerogative to build a wall on its side of the border, but Mexico would not pay for it the way Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump had insisted. On “CBS This Morning”, Kaine said Trump “didn’t have the guts to look the Mexican president in the eye” and demand that Mexico pay for the wall.
President Enrique Pena Nieto’s meeting with Mexico’s most-disliked man is turning into a public relations disaster for a leader already struggling with historically low popularity ratings.
Trump also promised to restrict legal immigration, calling for a commission that would keep the percentage of foreign-born people in the country to “historic norms”. The candidate who once said undocumented immigrants from Mexico were “rapists” and “drug dealers” sounded downright friendly on Wednesday. Monty was in the room earlier this month when Trump convened his Hispanic advisory council in NY, a meeting that left some with the impression he was interested in moderating his immigration beliefs.
But the aftermath of the meeting turned sour as Mr Pena Nieto contradicted the Republican’s claim that they had not discussed paying for the wall, saying he had flatly told Mr Trump that Mexico “would not pay for the wall”. Trump has made the border wall- and forcing Mexico to pay for it – a centerpiece of his campaign.
“Those days are over”, Trump said. Trump singled out Syria and Libya as two countries from which immigration would be suspended. In a speech in Phoenix meant to clarify his immigration positions after appearing to soften his stance, the Republican presidential nominee outlined a hard-line set of proposals for tackling illegal immigration. “And I happen to have a tremendous feeling for Mexican Americans – not only in terms of friendships, but in terms of the tremendous numbers that I employ in the United States”.
“Donald Trump wants us to be the deportation nation”, he said again.
The comments made to United States website Fusion re-iterated the same calls he made in February which went viral. We didn’t discuss payment of the wall.
She says the kind words Trump spoke about Mexican Americans didn’t provide any consolation.

Trump is trailing Clinton in surveys and several of Trump’s major Latino supporters said they are considering dropping their backing following his speech, Politico reported.

The inclusion of Trump puzzled many in Mexico, who said it wasn’t clear why their own unpopular president would agree to meet with someone so widely disliked in his country.
