– There are a lot of questions surround the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

“He has done such a lousy job as president”, Trump said. Zwillich says it is possible that the president will intentionally pick a moderate, centrist nominee – if he were to do so and Republicans blocked the nominee anyway, the party may wind up appearing radical and unreasonable.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he opposes a filibuster to prevent a vote, as some Republicans have suggested.

“It’s entirely up to the Senate whether to confirm that nomination, and I think we should not”, Cornyn said on radio station KSKY’s “The Mark Davis Show”.

In a separate interview broadcast on MSNBC, Biden said he would be deeply involved in advising Obama but that he had no desire himself to be named to the high court. “The Senate is to consider that nomination, and either they disapprove of that nominee or that nominee is elevated to the Supreme Court”, Obama said.

The White House confirmed Wednesday rather than attend his funeral, the president and first lady will instead pay their respects Friday when Scalia’s body lies in repose in the Supreme Court’s Great Hall.

“I don’t agree”, O’Connor, 85, told an Arizona television station.

Democrats, for their part, are trying to ensure that voters are aware of the blockade against Obama and predict that Republicans will pay at the polls in November.

Asking what standards the Senate should employ in reviewing nominees, McConnell wrote, “At the outset, the Senate should discount the philosophy of the nominee”.

Richie also said that since Scalia is a U.S. Supreme Court justice, they are all assigned U.S. marshals therefore making this a federal case. It’s fine for the Republican presidential candidates to point out that a vacancy on the Supreme Court is part of the upcoming election, and to promise to fill Justice Scalia’s vast shoes with someone similar.

Barack Obama has said there is more than enough time for the Senate to consider his nomination ahead of the US election in November
