Pujols 3 hits, Simmons’ 2 RBIs lead Angels over Yankees 2-0

NOTES: Saturday night’s start by 24-year-old Yankees RHP Luis Cessa marked the first time since 2011 that four Yankees pitchers younger than 25 made starts in one season.

Chacin earned his first victory in almost 10 weeks by combining with three relievers on a six-hit shutout in the Los Angeles Angels’ 2-0 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday in front of 40,309 at Angel Stadium.

Green (2-3) followed up his 11-strikeout performance on Monday in Toronto with five strikeouts and one walk while matching his career high for innings.

“He didn’t have his cutter today”, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Brian McCann’s two-run single gave the Yankees a 3-0 advantage in the first. “He was a little bit different today, but the good thing was that he found a way to get through it”.

The trade deadline acquisition, who Moreno owes $12 million next year, dropped his third game in four starts in an Angels uniform, surrendering an early lead to the Yankees in a 5-1 loss on Saturday at Angel Stadium.

“He really had good command of both his breaking pitches, the slider and his curveball”, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

“Since the flurry of transactions, mammoth 6’8” closer Dellin Betances has five saves in as many chances, to go along with 14 strikeouts in 8 innings with just one run allowed.

“I thought I was pretty good, just couldn’t finish two guys off with two outs”, Nolasco said. “I wasn’t trying to do too much”. Pujols just beat Brett Gardner’s throw home. He ended up with 5 ⁄3 scoreless against the Yankees, and the no-name bullpen of Deolis Guerra, JC Ramirez, and Fernando Salas combined to no-hit them over the final 10 outs. Salas pitched a flawless ninth for his fourth save. Aside from Pujols, Gregorio Petit, Jefry Marte and Kole Calhoun managed the other three hits for the Angels. Aggressive baserunning allowed him to score from second on Simmons’ first single.

Andrelton Simmons came through with two RBI singles – one in the first, one in the eighth – as the Angels prevented a season sweep by the Yankees.

Before Pujols’ shot into the left-field seats, only twice did the Angels advance a runner to second base. It pulled the future Hall of Famer even with Mark McGwire for 10th place on the all-time home run list.

In the fifth, Pujols was robbed of a two-run homer when center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury timed his leap and extended his glove over the fence. Mark Teixeira hit an inning-ending flyout to leave the bases loaded in the fourth. Didi Gregorius strikes out and Starlin Castro nubs a 10-footer in front of the plate to kill the rally.
