Pujols, Simmons lead Angels over Yankees
With two out in the first, Albert Pujols (3-for-4) singled, moved up on C.J. Cron’s walk and scored on Simmons’ line single to left.

Green, who pitched to a 1.52 ERA in 16 Triple-A starts this season, had just one good one in his first four as a Yankee, but now has strung together two big outings in a row to lower his ERA from 4.94 to 3.66. “I wasn’t trying to do too much”. Green yielded just five hits and one walk while whiffing five Anaheim hitters in the eventual 2-0 defeat. “But he still found a way to get through it all and give up one run”. NY can certainly use this win against the Angels, and plays like Ellsbury made will help them achieve that. “I could throw more fastballs and be more aggressive with everyone”.
Pujols already had a congratulatory text from McGwire and one of his sons waiting for him after the game. Right-hander Fernando Salas struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning for his fourth save.Andrelton Simmons drove in both runs while Albert Pujols collected three hits and nearly hit his 584th career home run, which would have put him into 10th place all-time. “I think those games in Seattle are really important”. He ended up with 5 ⁄3 scoreless against the Yankees, and the no-name bullpen of Deolis Guerra, JC Ramirez, and Fernando Salas combined to no-hit them over the final 10 outs. On this day, that’s all it would take for Green and the Yankees to lose as Chacin tossed 5 ²/₃ scoreless innings.
Prior to Pujols shot into the left field seats, only twice did the Angels advanced a runner to second base. Despite giving it a ride to center field, Pujols was unable to hit a home run against one of his fans from his days in St. Louis.
The offense threatened Chacin in the middle innings, but they stranded six runners on base between the third and sixth innings, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth when Mark Teixeira flied out to center.
Although Ellsbury’s sensational grab prevented further runs from crossing the plate, it hardly seemed to matter, as the Yankees squandered numerous opportunities throughout the game against a dismal Angels pitching staff. “We weren’t able to do that today”. Street was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right knee inflammation on August 2. Regardless, the Yankees will fly to Seattle to begin their next series tomorrow night at 10:10pm, as Michael Pineda faces Cody Martin.
