President Obama will be handing out the medals at noon Pacific time (3 p.m. ET) on Thursday, September 10, and we’ll all be able to watch the ceremony live from our desks via the White House website.

“In her works of fiction, Lahiri has illuminated the Indian-American experience in beautifully wrought narratives of estrangement and belonging”, the White House said in a statement.
This year’s other recipients include author Jhumpa Lahiri, historian Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham and architect Everett L. Fly.
Listed below are all 10 recipients of the 2014 National Humanities Medal.

Waters, proprietor of Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley, California, pioneered a culinary approach that emphasizes the use of fresh seasonal ingredients produced sustainably and locally.
Waters, 71, lobbied for decades for the White House to plant a vegetable garden, which it did in 2009. The Yale Sustainable Food Program is a hub for the study of food systems at Yale. Ever since, he has been unearthing and saving historically significant but forgotten or unrecognized Native- and African-American settlements, more than 1,200 to date.

The individuals and organizations getting the awards are selected by the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities which were established by the Congress in 1965 as independent agencies of the Federal Government. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. The restaurant became, instead, a revolutionary space that fostered the interconnectivity between local farmers and the chefs they could supply directly. The White House made an announcement that National Humanities Medal honors if awarded to either organizations or people who have deepened the country’s understanding about human experience.
