Upchurch wouldn’t say what books Lee bought during her visits.
Far less settled are stories surrounding “Watchman”, which was published last July as the sequel to “Mockingbird”. For decades she stayed out of the public eye, claiming to have said all she wanted in “Mockingbird” and vowing never to publish another book. Examining Lee’s aversion to the limelight, she asserts, “Ms. Lee – Nelle Harper or just Nelle to friends – simply rejected celebrity”.
Many wonder whether the author based the story on her real life, in Monroeville. Her quiet humility in the face of epic literary fame is the trait that is most commonly referenced.
After writing “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Lee decided not to publish any of her other work until the highly-anticipated release of “Go Set a Watchman”.
Hollywood stars and directors, authors and publishing houses quickly took to social media to mourn the writer and celebrate one of the most important novels of the 20th century.
Many fans, however, were disappointed in the portrayal of the characters they knew and loved. And he couldn’t be more right. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a rare, extraordinary novel that cut across everything in this country”. It is a attractive literary accomplishment from which we are all still benefiting.
A new play adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird” will land on Broadway during the 2017-18 season under the direction of Tony Award victor Bartlett Sher, written by Oscar-winner Aaron Sorkin. She dropped the Nelle when she became an author, because she was afraid readers would mispronounce it as “Nellie”.
“She was a great gal”, said Joe Brock, of Monroeville.
“I hoped for a little, but I got rather a whole lot and in some ways this was just about as frightening as the quick, merciful death I’d expected”, she said, joking about her expectation the novel would be a critical flop. The publisher announced plans to publish a manuscript of Lee’s, which was long thought to be lost, under the title “Go Set a Watchman”.
For years, Hohoff had worked with Lee on radical revisions to the text, from 1957 to the book’s eventual publication in 1960, according to The New York Times.
Fronk said she considered Lee one of the greatest fiction writers of all time.
Lee was loyal to the store, Upchurch said.
