Punter Steve Weatherford cut by New York Jets
Weatherford, who played for the Jets from 2009-10, was in a commercial break Saturday on 98.7 ESPN New York when the team called and offered him a job.

“If things happen and I can’t play, I’ll deal with that at that time”, Mangold said Thursday, speaking to reporters for the first time since getting hurt.
Weatherford punted for the Jets on Sunday at New England as an emergency replacement for Ryan Quigley, who had an infection in his right shin and was unavailable. Mangold remained face-down on the ground for a few moments as the medical staff attended to him.
“Just be a steady presence, help by seeing different looks and trying to answer any questions they have, but at the same time not step on any toes or intrude too much”, Mangold said. “I won’t let you get into the dark recesses of my mind there”.
While Mangold has experienced stinger injuries during his career, Bowles didn’t think that was the case with the latest injury from what he was told from doctors, calling it a “muscle/neck” situation.
“If he doesn’t make any progress [Friday], then I’ll be a little less optimistic”, Bowles said. “I had to come to grips with that”.
Mangold says he’s now feeling “peachy, ” but acknowledged he still feels “things” in his neck – without elaborating on whether that means general soreness or pain. Bowles said he’s comfortable having just those players, and added that all of the team’s cornerbacks have practiced backing up at the position throughout the season. “It all just depends on how things respond and seeing how I feel”.
Fortunately for Mangold, that wasn’t a possibility once an MRI exam, a Connecticut scan and an X-ray on his neck all turned up negative. The six-time Pro Bowl selection was also reminded of his reputation for being a tough guy.
“I don’t know. Luckily, it’s not tomorrow, it’s on Sunday”, he said. “You should talk to my wife”. Johnson has never played in a regular-season game. He had not punted in a game since being released by the Giants last month. In fact, the New York Jets disclosed that Tom Brady went in the game with the fierce determination of slaying the opponents – and the nobody from the Todd Bowles football squad prepared enough for the slaughter.
In the Jets’ first loss of the season, a 24-17 defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles on September 27, Marshall fumbled the ball backward in the first quarter and lost a fumble in the second quarter when he tried lateraling the ball to tight end Jef Cumberland.
The other major injury on that list is Jets starting safety Calvin Pryor. “It’s just feel. It’s more mental adjustments and identifying people and who is the better matchup for this game as far as who they’re going against”. It’s been better lately. “He looks pretty good to me”. Whether he plays Sunday when the Titans visit Houston remains to be seen.

Bowles said WR Chris Owusu suffered a concussion Sunday, but didn’t feel the effects until the team returned to New Jersey. Stacy has averaged 21.8 yards on eight returns…. Devin Smith was limited.
