‘Purple drank’ addiction, National Football League drug policy cloud McClain’s Cowboys future

Also impacting McClain’s ability to play is the fact that he has reportedly put on a ton of weight this offseason due to purple drank, which for the unaware is a mixture of Sprite and codeine. Abuse of the substance has been tied to rapid weight gain and, wouldn’t you know it, that’s reportedly what happened to McClain, who is said to be “incredibly out of shape” after putting on 40 pounds.

The door remains open for linebacker Rolando McClain’s return to the team despite failed drug tests for opiates, but club officials aren’t optimistic he’ll walk through it. “We just don’t know”. McClain was previously arrested three times in less than 16 months.

Technically, the information reported by the Dallas Morning News shouldn’t be publicly known, but the confidentiality provision of the substance-abuse policy routinely is violated, often by the league itself through reports appearing on league-owned media.

McClain subjected to be fined $40,000 a day for missing training camp, per the National Football League collective bargaining agreement.

Jones has said since Friday’s opening news conference the club won’t discuss McClain’s situation in depth publicly.

McClain now is facing a 10-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, but according to a report by Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, his offseason activities may be enough to have ended his playing days for good.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett declined comment when asked about McClain on Tuesday.

Lawrence, who will miss the first four games, is in training camp with the rest of his teammates. When he’s been able to get on the field, he’s the kind of guy who makes plays and causes headaches for opposing offenses.
