Putin: ‘I hope’ Iran deal signed soon
“We have undertaken relevant steps for strengthening this cooperation.”. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter noted that Iran should “continue to be isolated as a military”, Bloomberg reported.

Carter compared the nuclear deal with Iran to arms negotiations with the Soviet Union during the Cold War when the United States did not trust Moscow to comply with provisions of arms control pacts.
The Islamic Republic’s principal attitude has not changed, the official emphasized.
There may also be commercial dimensions to Russia’s support for Iran on missiles and arms trade.
That demand complicates the talks because the United States, Britain, France and Germany oppose such a move, but Russian Federation and China want the embargo lifted so they can sell ballistic missiles and other weaponry to Iran.
Some reports say the deadline may be extended by three days, after which the US Congress will need time to review any deal.
He also appreciated the efforts made by the Iranian team of negotiators in the ongoing nuclear talks in the Austrian capital of Vienna.
A day before, Obama had reportedly told senators that the chances of an accord being inked were “less than 50-50”.
“Still have hard issues to resolve”, Kerry tweeted on Saturday after meeting Zarif.
President Barack Obama told senators earlier this week that Kerry is more likely than not to come home empty-handed.
But a Western official said that was “not true”.
Third, the deal might provide for greater inspections, but these will not be robust enough to detect or deter Iranian cheating.
“Iran has always been committed to its obligations”.
“We proceed from the fact that instruments such as sanctions should be completely removed from the global economic lexicon and communication”, Putin said. Indeed, a continuing absence of foreign businesses would mean no increase in state revenue which could gradually undermine the willingness of the Iranian leadership to abide by the terms of a final deal.
The foreign minister said that Russian Federation “stands for the soonest [possible] lifting of the embargo and will back the choice to be made by the Iranian negotiators”.
Administration spokesmen have said the Iran deal, whose details remain secret, will include “unprecedented” verification provisions.
“”Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said “(t)here is growing acknowledgment that attempting to coerce a proud civilization into submission only leads to further conflict, resentment and hostility”.

“There is no evidence whatever that they have now taken a strategic direction to reverse course”, Bolton said. But without a deal, Iran’s nuclear program remains unconstrained. Second, containment is innately reactive – it draws a line in the sand and waits for the adversary to try crossing it. This would allow Iran to try to challenge the United States and its allies over time, by engaging in slightly and steadily more provocative behavior piecemeal.
