Military leaders have said that they can live with an active duty Army of 490,000 – bolstered by almost 500,000 soldiers in the National Guard and Reserves – as long as Congress provides enough funding to support that troop level.
Donald Trump showered praise on Vladimir Putin as the billioniare faced off with White House rival Hillary Clinton in their first live TV showdown.
NBC’s Matt Lauer also asked Hillary Clinton why she should not be disqualified from running after using a private server to handle government emails while Secretary of State.
“It’s a very different system, and I don’t happen to like the system. I mean, you can say, oh, isn’t that a awful thing – the man has very strong control over a country”, he said.
“Now, that is not just unpatriotic and insulting to the people of our country as well as to our commander-in-chief, it is scary”, she said.
“I think I would have a very, very good relationship with Putin”.
On Putin, Trump also said “the man has very strong control over a country”.
Trump had called Obama “the founder of ISIS”, an acronym for Islamic State, in stump speeches several weeks ago.
“She’s trigger-happy and very unstable, Trump said of his Democratic opponent, calling her use of a private email server while secretary of state “reckless“.
The Republican candidate took questions about his credentials to serve as commander-in-chief in a 30-minute forum hosted on the US aircraft carrier USS Intrepid in New York City. Mrs Clinton maintained that none of the messages she handled had a classified header at the top.
“The generals have been reduced to rubble”, Trump said, before noting he had “faith in certain of the commanders”.
“Last night was yet another test and Donald Trump failed yet again”, Clinton said, adding, “We saw more evidence that he is unfit and unqualified”.
“We need change, and we need it fast”.
On the USA intervention in Libya in 2011, Clinton rejected Trump’s criticism of her support for the effort as secretary of state.
Trump said Clinton’s handling of Libya proved disastrous.
“He’s on record extensively supporting intervention in Libya”, she said.
“She made a bad mistake in Libya”, said Trump.
The New York businessman, who has struggled at times to demonstrate a command of foreign policy, also seemed to acknowledge he does not now have a plan to address cyber security or the Islamic State group.
