Putin Orders Russian Military to Act Tough in Syria
Moscow stepped up strikes against IS after the group claimed responsibility for the bombing of a Russian passenger plane over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula in October, killing all 224 people on board.

Mr Shoigu said the military has received 35 new intercontinental ballistic missiles this year as part of an ambitious arms modernisation effort.
Putin today “warned anyone against further provocations, without naming Turkey”, and said “the military will respond in the toughest way”.
He said a Russian military base in the country had been reinforced with new air units and defence equipment.
“I instruct you to act extremely rigid”.
According to him, Russian airstrikes were strengthening the position of Islamic State (IS) in Syria.
It wasn’t immediately possible to confirm his statement.
Turkey had asserted that the warplane was shot down as it violated the Turkish airspace, a claim that has been vehemently denied by Russian Federation.
Davutoglu, a former university professor fluent in both English and Arabic, defended Turkey’s recent deployment of troops in northern Iraq, a move that has sparked a row with Baghdad.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu earlier on Friday called on Russian Federation for calm, but said Turkey’s patience is not unlimited.
The Russian air campaign in Syria against Islamic State and other militants is aimed at protecting Russia from terrorism, and actions are being synchronised with operations of special forces against domestic threats, Putin said.
Russia has two bases in the region and Turkey is saying that the Russians are moving ethnic minorities and Sunnis out of their ancestral homes because they are a security risk.
“Our action there hasn’t been prompted by some abstract geopolitical interests or a desire to train and test new weapons systems, which is important too”, Putin said.
Russian defense spending is expected to remain essentially flat in 2016, ending a trend of year-on-year budget hikes since the program went into force five years ago – Shoigu estimated the program to be about 47 percent complete at this point.
Russia’s defense minister says Russian warplanes have flown a total of 4,000 combat sorties in Syria since the launch of air campaign there.

“As a result of the successful launches by the aviation and submarine fleet, all targets were destroyed”, Shoigu said, adding that oil infrastructure, ammunition depots and a mine-making factory had been hit in the strikes.
