The G20 members will support multilateral trading system and oppose protectionism to unleash global trade cooperation potential and reverse the declining trend of trade growth, he said.

North Korea added to the drama by firing three ballistic missiles off its east coast on Monday. But Monday’s launch risked embarrassing its main ally Beijing, which has gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure a smooth summit meeting.

A sit-down between Obama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also laid bare the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies’ diverging interests in Syria, with Erdogan pointedly challenging Obama on USA support for Kurds fighting the Islamic State group in Syria.

“We have had some productive conversations about what a real cessation of hostilities would look like, that would allow us both, the United States and Russian Federation, to focus our attention on common enemies, like ISIL and Nusra”, Obama said, referring to Islamic State and the hardline Nusra Front.

The United States and Russian Federation have taken the first steps towards peace in Syria, with leaders Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin holding “productive” talks as Islamic State militants killed dozens in blasts across the war-torn nation.

The relationship between Obama and Putin has been strained in recent months over a number of issues such as cybersecurity.

The statement cited the climate change agreement reached in Paris late previous year – and now ratified by the US and China – urging other G-20 members to complete their respective procedures for ratification soon.

For other notable attendees of the high-profile meeting of powerful heads of state, Chinese authorities provided the red-carpet treatment for Russian president Vladimir Putin, South Korean president Park Geun-hye, India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, British prime minister Theresa May and Brazilian president Michel Temer.

In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party was relegated to third place behind an anti-immigrant party in a regional election on Sunday.

Obama said he had raised tax avoidance with leaders from the world’s 20 biggest economies at the G20 summit in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, but did not mention the Apple case.

“We [with Obama] basically had a discussion to look into details”.

“Commitment will be made to utilising all three policy tools of monetary and fiscal policies and structural reforms to achieve solid, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth”, Hagiuda told reporters on the side-lines of the summit.

Instead of disembarking Air Force One via a rolling red-carpet staircase, Obama exited through a little-used set of steps in an incident that raised speculation of a diplomatic snub by China.

Tensions on the tarmac also flared when a Chinese security official blocked US National Security Adviser Susan Rice and yelled at another US official who was trying to help journalists get closer to Obama.

But Obama added: “Part of what I’ve tried to communicate to President Xi Jinping is that the United States arrives at its power, in part, by restraining itself”. His call for diplomacy came with side of veiled threat – if Russian Federation wants to pick a fight, it’s one they will ultimately lose, he told reporters.
