Putin assessed Trump as “the absolute leader in the American presidential race”, suggesting his comments could be an early attempt to curry favor with a man he may have to deal with.

In an interview with “Morning Joe” Friday, Trump said he was pleased to be praised by Putin.

Putin’s statement came after a Ukrainian journalist “passed on a hello from Capt. Erofeyev and Sgt. Alexandrov”, two alleged Russian servicemen captured by Kiev whom Russia said quit the army before going to Ukraine.

“He’s running his country and at least he’s a leader”, Trump said, leaving the hosts stunned. “Of course, we welcome that”, said Putin.

Many GOP presidential hopefuls have been critical of Putin.

While fellow Republican contenders have been highly skeptical of stepped up Russian military involvement in Syria, Trump has welcomed it.

Mr Putin also took the opportunity to unleash a furious tirade against Turkey using vulgar language to wonder aloud whether it had shot down a Russian warplane last month to curry favour with the US.

Beyond a common desire for a lighter USA footprint in Syria, Putin and Trump also share a similar style.

In October, Mr Trump told US TV network CBS that he and Mr Putin would “probably get along… very well”.
