“We would like to highlight the extremely shocking and disappointing statistics regarding the Russian weightlifters”, said a statement by IWF. We fight for athletes who were disqualified’.
Aside from athletics, where all bar Florida-based Darya Klishina have been banned from competing at Rio, weightlifting is the only other sport to exclude all Russians after each individual governing body was asked to make a call on a sport-by-sport basis.
The IOC’s chief ethics and compliance officer, Paquerette Girard Zappelli, says “we will rely on the Brazilian authorities and their jurisdiction for criminal and security matters”.
Two of the three Russian cyclists barred from attending the Olympic Games by the UCI after featuring in a damning doping report have been named by their coach.
Addressing members of Russia’s Olympic team at the Kremlin, Putin said the scandal, which centres on allegations that the Russian government and FSB security service systematically covered up doping for years, had unfairly targeted many Russian sportspeople who had not faced specific and proven accusations.
A new digital-first Olympic Channel is due to launch on August 21 after the closing ceremony of this summer’s Rio Olympic games.
But the test isn’t ready yet, Budgett said late Thursday from Rio.
The federation made a decision to organise the three-hour competition after the Court of Arbitration for Sport last week rejected athletes’ appeals against the IAAF ban.
The International Olympic Committee ruled on Sunday that Russians who had previously been banned for doping could not compete at Rio.
Two-time Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva did not compete, explaining that her legal battle against athletics authorities over the ban had not allowed her to adequately prepare.
China’s delegation of athletes and officials in Rio numbers 711 people; the largest for the nation aside from 2008 when it hosted in Beijing.
The free online channel will be will be available year-round, at anytime, anywhere and on any device at olympicchannel.com and promises to offer content “where the Games never end”.
