Putnam County Relay For Life

Phillipsburg’s Relay for Life kicked off Saturday afternoon, a celebration of lives affected by cancer.

“The wonderful Relay For Life/Team Relay Nation that I met in Las Vegas past year has made the official announcement for 2016”, Martin said of the group’s planned visit.

“It’s Hoquiam. People come out of the woodwork to help”, Stamon said.

Mike Stamon, logistics committee chairman, said that’s how he can tell Relay for Life makes a difference in the fight against cancer. “Prior to that it was simply a death sentence”.

American Cancer Society organizers report Team Relay Nation members were in Buffalo Friday for day visits to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge on Summer Street. “I feel very fortunate”, he said. He was given a 5 year prognosis and lived 13 years. Morisette said she’ll know later this week the total amount raised from the fundraiser.

That is what the American Cancer Society is looking to continue.

They have until August to raise the money and as of the beginning of the event on Friday, about $65,000 had been raised.

Radiation treatments saved her life for a second time.

“They need that support when they leave”, he said.

“[The relay is for] everyone, those who have cancer and those who might get cancer”, said Pam Niese. Teams and participants can begin setup and registration at noon with walking beginning at that time.

Laurel Anderson traveled from IL to attend the Relay For Life. “But I have to remember it’s helping my friends and family across the world”.

He said the team started in memory of his sister, Sandy Cleland, who had cancer.

At the Elmer’s Legacy tent, they were selling watermelon, granola bars, and waters to raise money.

Held at Bucksport High School’s track this year. She was diagnosed with endometrial cancer 6-and-a-half years ago.

Other team themes included the Cortland Playroom’s “Diggin Up a Cure for Cancer” with 20 participants and Champion Middle School’s “Strike Out Cancer Now” with 35 participants.

“It’s a good event, I wish more people would come out”. A portion of the proceeds stays within the city and another portion goes to research and resources provided by the American Cancer Society. A corn hole tournament was planned later in the evening.

The closing ceremony is at 9 this morning.
