QB franchise tag could hit $20 million

If the salary cap jumps from $144 million in 2015 to $153 million, the estimated value of the one-year deal for a franchise quarterback is $19.6 million.

UPDATE, 3:00 p.m.: La Canfora, citing a source with “direct knowledge” of the negotiations, says that talks remain ongoing though there is a “bridge to gap”.

One day after a report suggested the Washington Redskins and free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins were nowhere close on a new contract comes an even more ominous update. Kirk Cousins had a breakout year in 2015 and could command big money if he reaches the open market.

We’ll keep monitoring the situation, but it is never a good headline when the team and your franchise quarterback stop talking.

Cousins, a fourth-round pick in 2012, supplanted Robert Griffin III as the starter in August.

It appears Kirk Cousins will not cash in, like he wanted to, after leading the Washington Redskins to the National Football League playoffs. “Our philosophy with me and the organization is we won’t talk contract stuff with the media, but I want him to be a part of the Redskins”.

There are two versions of the franchise tag that Washington could use between now and the March 1 deadline: the exclusive tag and the non-exclusive tag.

It’ll be interesting to see whether other current players speak out on behalf of Cousins, and whether that will make any difference in the negotiations between Cousins and the team.

Washington has made it clear they want to sign Cousins to a long-term deal, but they’ve said privately they want that deal at the right price. The Redskins would then have until July 15 to get a multi-year deal done.
