QB Vernon Adams finally eligible to join Oregon roster

The former Eastern Washington star told The Register-Guard on Thursday night that he passed perhaps the most scrutinized math test ever taken and will finally join the Ducks as a graduate transfer. NCAA rules allow players who have graduated to transfer to another school without having to sit out a season.

The ongoing story of Vernon Adams and his quest from FCS powerhouse Eastern Washington to College Football Playoff contender Oregon has been thoroughly examined every step of the way.

However, Adams was unable to join the team until he passed a math class, which he announced via Instagram that he completed Thursday.

With the math issues behind him, Adams is now turning his attention to earning the reins under center for Oregon. EWU almost beat Washington last fall, as Adams threw for seven touchdowns in the game. But if you fail, you’ll be the nation’s best quarterback without a place to play (and everyone will know you failed that test).

In 2014, Adams completed over 66 percent of his passes for 3,483 yards, 35 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Ducks coach Mark Helfrich says it would be ideal to pick a starting quarterback as early as possible, and as late as the weekend before the first game. Will the playmaking ability of Vernon Adams be enough to make up ground on the established leadership of Jeff Lockie? He also ran for another 1,232 yards and 11 TDs.

Still, it’s hard to disregard the numbers that Adams has put up in his three seasons.

After Lockie and other players rushed off the practice field to watch Marcus Mariota’s preseason NFL debut with the Tennessee Titans, Adams stuck around to get some extra work in with wide receiver Charles Nelson and true freshman quarterback Travis Jonsen. Should Jeff Lockie falter in September – shaky against EWU, rattled and ineffective against Michigan State, harried and inept in the Pac-12 opener against Utah – then Oregon has a playmaker they can turn to in order to right the ship.
