It was the first time Pac-12 champion OR ever received a No. 1 seed, but the big surprise was ACC Tournament runnerup Virginia being placed on the top line ahead of Big Ten tournament champion Michigan State. Second, their No. 4 seeding, one spot worse than Texas A&M, the team the Wildcats beat in the SEC tournament title game. Buddy Hield and the Sooners are a risky No. 2 seed.

Kansas is a lock for a top seed.

A topsy turvy season in college basketball delivered a few more twists when the brackets came out Sunday.

The contenders include 32 teams who automatically qualify by winning their conference title, and 36 at-large bids awarded by a selection committee. Florida Gulf Coast is back in the tournament for the second time in program history and first since it reached the Sweet 16 in 2013.

Virginia’s top seed in the Midwest came at a price as the Cavaliers might have to go through No. 2 seed Michigan State to get to the Final Four.

The games have been played and the championships won.
