The Magnitude 4.8 tremor struck approximately 20 kilometres from Victoria on Vancouver Island (Earthquakes Canada rated the quake at Magnitude 4.3).

No casualties or damage have been reported.

Translink tweeted that the Expo and Millennium SkyTrain were shutting down for the time being until safety could be confirmed. Residents in numerous B.C communities took to Twitter to say they also felt the quake.

The Vancouver Mayor’s office says there have been no reports of any major damage in the city, with no power outages either.

“I was sleeping and woke up with my daughter saying: ‘Mom the roof just moved, ‘” she said.

Natural Resources Canada measured the magnitude at 4.3 on the Richter scale while the U.S. Geological Survey measured the magnitude at 4.8. He said the agency had not recorded any aftershocks.

The USGS website recorded more than 10,000 reports of the quake being felt.

About a half-hour after the first quake, San Bernardino County Fire Chief Mark Hartwig said he felt a good roll then a sharp jolt. Earthquakes with a magnitude of 3 or less are usually not felt except by very few under especially favorable conditions, according to the USGS.
